There are several dynasties which ruled over various parts of the Indian subcontinent. Some were powerful and many others are even forgotten today. The Gupta Dynasty is one such dynasty that has left a mark in Indian history, not only because of its mammoth empire but also because of its contribution towards the development of art, literature and science. Be it Gupta empire art and architecture or Gupta literature for that matter, every aspect has been outstanding in terms of innovation and creativity.

Gupta dynasty rulers not only paid attention to their kingdom’s expansion but also worked on reforms for the welfare of their people. They were in power majorly from 319 to 485 CE. This era was so prosperous that it also righty called as the Golden age of Indian history. The most prominent Gupta dynasty rulers of all were Chandragupta I, Samudragupta and Chandragupta II. Chandragupta married Kumaradevi of Lichchavi dynasty and the Kingdom of Magadha was handed over to him as dowry. Samudragupta ruled for 45 years until 380 CE. He conquered several empires like Ahichchhatra, Malwas, Yaudheyas, the Arjunayanas, Maduras and the Abhiras. Chandragupta II was known for promoting art and literature during his reign.

The Gupta Empire was home to revered classical Sanskrit writer Kalidasa. He is also considered as the greatest poet and dramatist in Sanskrit language. Another gift from Gupta period was Aryabhatta, the famed mathematician and astronomer from ancient times. The existence of personalities like these proves the fact that the lifestyle of people living in the Indian subcontinent was much more sophisticated and progressive even in those days. When it comes to architecture from the Gupta period, one must visit Ajanta, Elephanta and Ellora caves or the Dashavatara Temple in Deogarh once to understand the magnificence of these breath-taking structures that portray the perfect blend of beauty and accuracy!

Another aspect that cannot be neglected about the Gupta Empire was their coinage. The gold coins issued by various Gupta rulers are considered to be the most special ancient coins in the world of numismatics.
